personal statement

Who I really am that you can’t see . . .  I don’t do anything I don’t believe in.  I care about educators and clients both personally and professionally.  I work to create cooperative, collaborative cultures emphasizing praise, positivity, and fun in learning.  I have the skills to prepare and implement long-term plans for sustained success.  I enjoy really getting to know people and developing relationships with a wide array of people.  I understand the bottom line is important but believe it is not everything.

my wife

Married for over 24 years, Kim is my best friend.  She knows me inside and out and still loves me.  She is funny, charismatic, and an amazing dancer as well as highly intelligent, organized, and owns her own company.

my daughter

Grace is 21 and loves music and art.  She is fully bi-lingual in English and Korean as she has attended a private Korean school just outside Seoul, which means all of her schooling is taught in Korean.  She sings all of the time so we always know where she is.  Grace is currently perusing a degree in zoology.

my son

Lacidar is 17 and a ball of nuclear energy.  Whether it's a sport, committee member, or chapel, he's always involved.  He's a thinker who loves good conversation and has a really big heart.  His most used line is, "I'm OK!" of which is usually heard following some large crash or bang.  Lacidar is highly athletic, playing most every sport with ease.  But, his true love is basketball.

my pets

We actually have two dogs and one cat.  Our dog's names are Jack and Anna.  Both have traveled the world with us but don't mind where we are as long as they are close to me, even if that means on a blanket under my desk.  Our cat's name is Benji.  She follows my wife everywhere.  You can usually find her on my wife's computer.

biography

Even though I am in "traditional teaching" now, I have been teaching nearly all my adult life. Upon graduating college, I decided to move to Nashville, Tennessee to get into the music industry. I did what everyone does upon arriving in Nashville with dreams and aspirations, I got a job waiting tables. I had a great time but heard about a job where they would teach you how to dance and teach you how to teach it . . . and pay you in the process. I was there! I knew one day that I wanted to be able to dance with my wife. Little did I know I was going to meet my wife there and she had a 20-year start on me. Fast forward less than one year and we were married. We were dance partners, traveling the country competing professionally, and eventually owning our own dance studio. 10 years later and two young children, we decided to leave it behind and take a real teaching position in South Korea.

I love to teach. I love that light-bulb moment that goes off in a student's mind, no matter what age they are. When they get it, you know it. Because I was able to be in the classroom as a teacher and then became a teacher trainer, I understand both sides when it comes to teachers needing practical, hands-on help getting full, active engagement from all their students. Becoming a Kagan trainer taught me about classroom management, differentiated instruction, and getting active engagement from students in my classroom. Better yet, I went on to train teachers, giving them tools to use, and helping them to see discipline issues go down, engagement go up, and achievement begin to occur in their own classrooms. Since becoming a coveted certified Kagan trainer, I now hold over 10 certifications that allow me to train teachers and administrators alike. They range from Instructional Leadership, Accelerated Achievement, and Kagan Cooperative Learning to Cooperative Meetings, Brain Friendly Teaching, and Cooperative Learning & ELL. I also am a certified Instructional Coach which allows me to go into classrooms and work with teachers to help them be better educators. I’ve given hundreds of workshops to thousands of teachers in multiple countries like South Korea, Guam, China, the UAE, and the USA.  Becoming a Director of Teaching and Learning, and even a Vice Principal, has been the most fulfilling and rewarding career I could have ever dreamed of.  More importantly, it has even helped in my marriage and as a father. I am a better listener, ask better questions, and can have a growth mindset at home as well as at work.

Our family loved living in Korea and so we ended up staying all these years. Our daughter was 5 when we moved to Korea and our son was 2 1/2. My daughter is now about to turn 21 and is a native Korean speaker which makes her bi-lingual with her English. My son is a junior in high school and a stand-out athlete.  I am looking for a long-term position in an environment and culture that takes advantage of my intricate knowledge of successful teaching and   collaborative, engaging leadership style.  I want to be in a school that will use my unique leadership skills and where teachers will become better educators, in a place where our family can actually settle down.  This is where I will thrive. As for my wife, she thrives by my side.  And yes, we still do dance every now and again, but mostly in our kitchen.

origin

Born and raised in Tennessee, in the heart of America, I consider my roots to be both in Memphis and in Nashville.  I met my wife soon after moving to Nashville, we married there, and it's where our daughter was born.  So, I actually consider Nashville to be where "we" are from.

things I love

ballroom dancing

I've been dancing since I was 24 years old.  I was a professional ballroom dancer for many years.  I love the shape it keeps me in and old Fred Astaire movies and dance classics such as "Shall We Dance" (the old one) and "Strictly Ballroom".

eating

My wife is an amazing cook.  Everything she makes is incredible.  I fell in love with her the first time she cooked for me.  I'm still in love with her today - she just made brownies!

beaches

I love beaches.  It's my happy place.  My wife and I want to retire on an island and own a bed and breakfast close to a beach.  We love the ocean, too.  But, we love the beach more.

traveling

I love to travel.  Seeing new cultures, eating the food, and meeting the people are really a pleasure.  The world has such rich diversity to not see all the wonderful places God made.

helping people

Whether through education or by being a pre-marital counselor, I love helping people.  It's not the "how" I do it, it's what helping means to the other person.  I love being a special needs buddy at church on Sunday's and leading the men's Bible study.

Foster Family Image.jpg

fostering

One of the most rewarding things we did as a family was foster and then become co-guardians of two children who came out of the foster system on Guam.  They traveled to South Korea where they were adopted by the other guardian as soon as the courts are allowed back open on Guam after COVID. This is one of the most proud and humbling things I have ever done.
